TORONTO – The Department of Health (Diabetes Health Services) on Thursday issued a health advisory for the introduction of a new treatment option for erectile dysfunction (ED) that is designed to be more widely available and potentially cheaper than the standard treatment. The move comes as the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) in Toronto recently introduced the first generic version of Viagra, the active ingredient in the blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The drug is available through prescription only, meaning it has not been available as an approved treatment in the United States since its introduction in 1998.
The first generic version of the drug will not replace the standard Viagra brand-name version, which was already available in Canada since the patent on the drug expired in 2015. The new version will include the same active ingredient as the original erectile dysfunction drug, but will not replace the original blue pill, which was available under the brand name Pfizer in the United States. It will also be available without a prescription in Canada, allowing it to be cheaper and faster to use than the original.
A spokesperson for Health Sciences Authority, which was formed in the context of Health Sciences Canada's ongoing consultations with healthcare professionals, said the new version of Viagra will provide men with more access to sexual health and improve their quality of life. “As long as men are treated with Viagra and they are not using it as a treatment for ED, we can offer a more affordable and effective treatment option. This is the same approach that has been used by the Canadian government and will help men to avoid the consequences of taking the prescription drug and make sure they are treated appropriately.”
The new treatment option, called the "Viagra Pill," is a pill taken every day, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis and causing an erection to occur. The pill is available in three strengths, 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. It will be available without a prescription and can be taken with or without food, as long as men have their prescription only. Viagra will only be available to men who are 18 and older, meaning it cannot be used as a treatment for ED. The drug is not available as a daily pill, and men can purchase it as a regular pill or as a daily treatment option.
“The Viagra Pill has been a breakthrough in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and is now available to millions of men around the world,” said Dr. John R. Lechleiter, a clinical associate professor at the University of Toronto, and co-lead author of a paper published in the journal The American Journal of Urology. “While it was previously available only in Canada, now that Viagra is available in Canada and many other countries, it is now available without a prescription and cheaper than the original Viagra.”
The erectile dysfunction drug was launched in the U. S. by Pfizer and is already available as a generic pill in Canada and the United Kingdom, according to the HSA's website.
“The first generic Viagra that was available in the U. was approved in the 1990s and was a game changer,” said HSA spokesperson Rachael O'Connor, adding that the drug has been available since 1998 and that it was “the first treatment for erectile dysfunction to be available without a prescription.”
HSA has worked with the government of Quebec and has approved the approval of the original Viagra in Canada since 1998, she added.
“The only way to get this approved in Canada is through the government’s drug supply chain,” she said. “So if you want to see a generic Viagra, we would be happy to send you one to go.”
The new drug, which was approved in the United States last year, is available without a prescription in Canada and is available in two strengths, 50 mg and 100 mg. The pills are available in tablet form for daily use, while the pill form is taken by mouth. The drug is also available in liquid form, containing 100 mg of the active ingredient, sildenafil, which is similar to the original erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra.
“This means that people who have been prescribed Viagra in Canada will be able to use the pill while still getting the same level of benefit and benefit-to-risk,” said Lechleiter. “In addition, there is no need to worry about people being prescribed a generic version of the drug, because they will still get the same dose of the original drug and they will still need to be prescribed the same treatment.”
